Proper care and rehabilitation after hip replacement surgery are essential for a smooth recovery. Following these guidelines can help reduce complications and improve mobility.
Wound Care and Hygiene
- Showering: You may shower 48 hours after surgery, but avoid soaking in bathtubs or pools until cleared by your provider.
- Gently pat the incision dry after bathing.
- Dressing Care: Keep the bandage in place for about two weeks, or as directed. Avoid applying lotions, creams, or ointments to the incision.
Pain and Swelling Management
- Cold and Heat Therapy: Use ice packs or a heating pad on the hip area to help with pain and swelling. Apply for 15-20 minutes at a time as needed.
- Medication: Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as instructed. If you experience side effects or excessive discomfort, consult your provider.
- Preventing Constipation: Pain medication can cause constipation. Increase fiber intake, drink plenty of water, and consider using an over-the-counter stool softener or a mild laxative if needed.
Mobility and Activity Guidelines
- Daily Movement: Follow your prescribed home exercise program to improve strength and flexibility. Walking short distances regularly can help prevent stiffness.
- Driving: You may resume driving once you feel safe, have regained good reaction times, and are no longer taking prescription pain medication. Speak with your provider or physical therapist for guidance.
